Planning a Northern Lights proposal in Iceland? You've chosen the perfect time. The 2025-2026 season marks the solar maximum peak, offering unprecedented aurora activity for your once-in-a-lifetime moment. With the right planning, you can maximise your chances of a magical “yes” moment beneath the aurora.
We're entering the solar maximum phase of the 11-year solar cycle, meaning more frequent and intense Northern Lights displays. Iceland, positioned perfectly under the auroral oval, will experience some of the most spectacular aurora shows in over a decade.
Late August to March offers the longest nights and strongest aurora activity but due to the Solar Cycle 25 the aurora season appeared to be started since mid August. Here's your month-by-month breakdown for your proposal planning:

The aurora is unpredictable and cannot be 100% guarantee it may appear anytime and anywhere. Plan you trip for several days, be flexible and have second plan.
As mentioned the northern lights are unpredictable, and forecasts can be complicated if you only look at the KP-index. Here’s what actually matters:
The further you are from Reykjavík or major towns, the brighter the aurora will appear. Iceland’s countryside is naturally dark, perfect for proposals.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Southeast Iceland is perfect for northern lights photography. Large icebergs float in the dark water, reflecting the colorful aurora above.
Arrive just after sunset while there's still some light on the ice. As it gets darker, in good condition the northern lights appear and create beautiful reflections on the water's surface. The green and pink lights dancing above the white icebergs make for stunning photos.
Known as Iceland’s most photographed mountain, Kirkjufell with its nearby waterfall creates a stunning backdrop for a proposal. The road can be icy in winter, so renting a 4x4 is recommended. For the best experience, arrive in the early evening when crowds are thinner, and frame your photo near Kirkjufellsfoss to capture reflections in the foreground.
Just 40 minutes from Reykjavík, Þingvellir is both historically significant and visually spectacular under the northern lights. Park near Öxarárfoss waterfall for a dramatic proposal spot, and if you go on a weekday you’ll have more privacy. Look east toward the Almannagjá canyon for the best chance at unobstructed aurora views.
On Iceland’s South Coast, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are two of the country’s most dramatic waterfalls, perfect for a proposal under the aurora. At Seljalandsfoss, during the day lights you can even walk behind the waterfall for a truly magical perspective. Skógafoss is more popular, but you can escape the crowds by exploring side paths. Remember: paths are slippery in winter, so crampons or sturdy boots are a must.

Just outside Reykjavík, Grótta Lighthouse gives you ocean views and aurora displays without leaving the city. It’s easy to reach by car and taxi.
The Sun Voyager sculpture is one of Reykjavík’s most photographed landmarks, offering a striking foreground with mountains and the sea behind. While light pollution in the city center can dim auroras, the sculpture itself creates a bold and memorable proposal setting. Keep in mind that this popular tourist destination can get crowded, especially during peak aurora season.
Only a 20-minute drive from the city, Heiðmörk is a nature reserve with dark skies perfect for aurora watching. The peaceful setting and minimal light pollution make this an ideal spot for both aurora photography and an intimate proposal away from crowds.
This lesser-known peninsula sits close to Reykjavík but feels worlds away from city lights. The wide-open coastline provides excellent northern exposure, while the tidal pools along the rocky shore create stunning reflections of the dancing aurora. The remote, dramatic setting offers complete privacy for your special moment, with the sound of gentle waves adding to the romantic atmosphere.

Successfully photographing northern lights during a marriage proposal requires careful preparation and the right equipment. Romantic cabin stays offer cozy alternatives with flickering candles, music, and intimate settings perfect for proposals. Many luxury cabins feature floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor hot tubs for comfort while still watching for potential aurora appearances.
