How to Plan the Northern Lights Proposal in Iceland's cover picture

Planning a Northern Lights proposal in Iceland? You've chosen the perfect time. The 2025-2026 season marks the solar maximum peak, offering unprecedented aurora activity for your once-in-a-lifetime moment. With the right planning, you can maximise your chances of a magical “yes” moment beneath the aurora.

Why 2025-2026 is the year for your northern lights proposal

We're entering the solar maximum phase of the 11-year solar cycle, meaning more frequent and intense Northern Lights displays. Iceland, positioned perfectly under the auroral oval, will experience some of the most spectacular aurora shows in over a decade.

When is the best time to propose under the Northern Lights?

Late August to March offers the longest nights and strongest aurora activity but due to the Solar Cycle 25 the aurora season appeared to be started since mid August. Here's your month-by-month breakdown for your proposal planning:

Month

What to Expect

August - September

Start of aurora season, milder nights, shorter windows.

October

Balanced long dark nights and tolerable weather.

November - January

Peak aurora season. Longest, darkest nights.

February

Valentine’s Day (Feb 14) is peak romantic timing

March

Last chance before summer brightness.

How to maximise your northern lights proposal success

1. Be flexible

The aurora is unpredictable and cannot be 100% guarantee it may appear anytime and anywhere. Plan you trip for several days, be flexible and have second plan.

2. Use aurora forecasts

As mentioned the northern lights are unpredictable, and forecasts can be complicated if you only look at the KP-index. Here’s what actually matters:

  • Look for real-time data: A high KP value doesn’t automatically mean you’ll see auroras. Conditions like cloud cover, local darkness, and the Bz component of the solar wind are far more important. Low KP can still produce strong auroras in Iceland. Even KP 2–3 can deliver displays because Iceland is at high latitude. App like Hello Aurora provide you with real-time aurora forecast with easy to understand informations and alerts.
  • Cloud coverage matters: Even with strong geomagnetic activity, a cloudy sky hides the aurora. Always check for cloud coverage especially the low cloud coverage.

3. Escape light pollution

The further you are from Reykjavík or major towns, the brighter the aurora will appear. Iceland’s countryside is naturally dark, perfect for proposals.

4. Choose the right weather windows

Auroras require clear skies and Icelandic weather can be extreme

Best places to propose under the northern lights in Iceland

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Southeast Iceland is perfect for northern lights photography. Large icebergs float in the dark water, reflecting the colorful aurora above.

Arrive just after sunset while there's still some light on the ice. As it gets darker, in good condition the northern lights appear and create beautiful reflections on the water's surface. The green and pink lights dancing above the white icebergs make for stunning photos.

Kirkjufell Mountain, Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Known as Iceland’s most photographed mountain, Kirkjufell with its nearby waterfall creates a stunning backdrop for a proposal. The road can be icy in winter, so renting a 4x4 is recommended. For the best experience, arrive in the early evening when crowds are thinner, and frame your photo near Kirkjufellsfoss to capture reflections in the foreground.

Þingvellir National Park

Just 40 minutes from Reykjavík, Þingvellir is both historically significant and visually spectacular under the northern lights. Park near Öxarárfoss waterfall for a dramatic proposal spot, and if you go on a weekday you’ll have more privacy. Look east toward the Almannagjá canyon for the best chance at unobstructed aurora views.

Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss Waterfalls

On Iceland’s South Coast, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are two of the country’s most dramatic waterfalls, perfect for a proposal under the aurora. At Seljalandsfoss, during the day lights you can even walk behind the waterfall for a truly magical perspective. Skógafoss is more popular, but you can escape the crowds by exploring side paths. Remember: paths are slippery in winter, so crampons or sturdy boots are a must.

Spots Near Reykjavík

Grótta Lighthouse

Just outside Reykjavík, Grótta Lighthouse gives you ocean views and aurora displays without leaving the city. It’s easy to reach by car and taxi.

Sun Voyager Sculpture

The Sun Voyager sculpture is one of Reykjavík’s most photographed landmarks, offering a striking foreground with mountains and the sea behind. While light pollution in the city center can dim auroras, the sculpture itself creates a bold and memorable proposal setting. Keep in mind that this popular tourist destination can get crowded, especially during peak aurora season.

Heiðmörk Nature Reserve

Only a 20-minute drive from the city, Heiðmörk is a nature reserve with dark skies perfect for aurora watching. The peaceful setting and minimal light pollution make this an ideal spot for both aurora photography and an intimate proposal away from crowds.

Geldinganes Peninsula

This lesser-known peninsula sits close to Reykjavík but feels worlds away from city lights. The wide-open coastline provides excellent northern exposure, while the tidal pools along the rocky shore create stunning reflections of the dancing aurora. The remote, dramatic setting offers complete privacy for your special moment, with the sound of gentle waves adding to the romantic atmosphere.

How to capture the perfect aurora proposal photo

Successfully photographing northern lights during a marriage proposal requires careful preparation and the right equipment. The aurora borealis creates one of nature's most spectacular backdrops for life's biggest moments, but capturing both the dancing lights and your romantic gesture demands specific photography techniques.

Essential camera equipment for aurora photography

DSLR or mirrorless camera with full manual controls forms the foundation of your equipment kit. These cameras allow you to adjust ISO, aperture, and shutter speed independently, crucial for low-light aurora photography. Get Wide-angle lenses between 14-24mm with f/2.8 aperture or wider are essential for aurora photography. The wide focal length captures the expansive aurora displays across the sky, while the large aperture gathers maximum light in dark conditions. A tripod becomes absolutely critical for sharp long-exposure shots, as aurora photography typically requires exposures lasting 10-20 seconds. Remote shutter releases or built-in camera timers prevent camera shake while allowing you to focus entirely on your proposal moment. Headlamps with red filters preserve your night vision while enabling you to adjust camera settings in darkness. Extra batteries, cold Icelandic weather drains camera batteries rapidly, so pack multiple spare batteries and keep them warm in inside pockets.

What to bring for a romantic aurora viewing experience

Aurora viewing in Iceland requires careful preparation for harsh winter conditions. Thermal base layers and waterproof outerwear become essential when standing outside under sub-zero skies for extended periods. The combination keeps you warm and dry while waiting for aurora activity to intensify. Pack a thermos filled with hot chocolate, coffee, or herbal tea to warm both you and your partner throughout the evening. These warm beverages create a cozy atmosphere while providing comfort during long waits. Bring energy-rich snacks or sweet treats to maintain energy levels and make the waiting period more enjoyable and romantic. Consider portable seating options like insulated cushions or lightweight camping chairs, allowing comfortable aurora viewing without standing on frozen ground for hours. Hand and foot warmers provide additional comfort during particularly cold nights.

Logistics and travel planning

Successful aurora viewing requires strategic planning around weather patterns, lunar cycles, and seasonal timing. Plan stays lasting 5-7 nights to maximize your probability of witnessing strong aurora displays, as northern lights are never guaranteed on any single evening.

Transportation options in Iceland

Renting a 4x4 vehicle provides maximum flexibility for reaching remote aurora viewing locations, but only attempt self-driving if you're confident navigating winter road conditions. Iceland's winter roads can be treacherous with ice, snow, and sudden weather changes.

Accommodation

For the best chance of seeing the aurora, stay in accommodations outside Reykjavík’s light pollution, where the skies are darker and the displays more vivid. Many countryside hotels and guesthouses even offer aurora wake-up calls, so you won’t miss the lights while you sleep. For added reliability, install the Hello Aurora app on your smartphone it provides real-time alerts on geomagnetic activity and live aurora sightings reported by other users across Iceland, often right near your location.

Backup plans when northern lights don't appear

Aurora borealis remains unpredictable despite advanced forecasting, making backup proposal plans essential. Weather conditions, solar activity, and cloud cover can prevent aurora visibility even during optimal conditions.

Create equally romantic alternative experiences that don't depend on aurora activity. Private hot spring soaks at locations like Sky Lagoon or Hvammsvík provide intimate settings with dramatic Icelandic landscapes. The warm geothermal waters create magical atmospheres regardless of sky conditions.

Romantic cabin stays offer cozy alternatives with flickering candles, music, and intimate settings perfect for proposals. Many luxury cabins feature floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor hot tubs for comfort while still watching for potential aurora appearances.

Candlelit dinners at Reykjavík's finest restaurants like Dill, Matur og Drykkur, or Grillmarkaðurinn provide sophisticated proposal settings with exceptional Icelandic cuisine. These restaurants often accommodate special requests for engagement arrangements.

Safety considerations for aurora photography

Iceland's winter conditions present real safety challenges that require serious preparation. Always check safetravel.is before departing for current road conditions, weather warnings, and travel advisories. Icelandic weather can change rapidly, creating dangerous driving conditions.

Never venture near cliffs, glaciers, or unstable terrain in darkness, even when chasing the perfect aurora photograph. Many of Iceland's most photogenic locations become extremely hazardous at night with limited visibility.
