How to share your aurora sighting photos in real time

Step 1: Download Hello Aurora and create an account
Download the Hello Aurora app for free on the App Store or Google Play Store and create an account.

Step 2: Click the “Eyes” Icon to report what you see
When you spot the Northern Lights, tap the eyes icon 👁️ in the app.
Select the aurora intensity level:

  • Weak – visible only through a camera lens
  • Medium – faintly visible to the naked eye
  • Strong – bright and clearly visible to the naked eye

Step 3: Upload a Photo
Upload photo from your gallery, then tap “Share Now.”
Your real-time aurora sighting moment will instantly appear on the map, visible to other aurora chasers around the world.

How to view aurora photos and locations

When you are out chasing the Northern Lights, it can feel lonely, especially on cold nights under vast skies. That’s where the Hello Aurora community helps you stay connected.

Here’s how to explore live aurora sightings and aurora locations shared by other users:

Step 1: Tap “Moments.”

Step 2: Browse the latest real-time photos from users around the world.

Step 3: To see where the photo was taken. Press on the 3 dots on the right hand side and press "Show moments's location". The map page will open and you can track where the aurora photo was taken.

Step 4: Check out Featured Moments, hand-picked by our team for their beauty and clarity.

Step 5: React to other users’ photos with green heart emoji 💚 and celebrate their sightings!

Can I see where other people spotted the Northern Lights?

Yes. By opening the 'Map' tab in the Hello Aurora app, you can view real-time aurora sightings shared by users, including their photos, locations, and aurora intensity levels.

Do I get notification when someone near me spotted the aurora?

Yes. We will send you notification when someone in your country spotted the Northern Lights and share their sightings. You can upgrade to Pro version if you want precise kilometres range and only focus on the aurora spotting that are nearby you.

How can I get my photo to be featured?

The featured aurora moment are hand-picked by our team. By sharing your beautiful photos on the app might get featured by us.

Can I delete my photos?

Of course. You can always delete your photos on our app. On the right hand side on the 3 dots.

Can I share my photo anytime?

No. To keep every Aurora Moment authentic and focused on real-time aurora sightings, you can only upload a photo when the Northern Lights are actually visible.

Our system automatically verifies aurora activity and only allows sharing when conditions are active. This ensures that every photo you see in the app reflects a genuine, live aurora experience.

To maintain real-time accuracy, photos can only be shared if they are taken within the past hour. This helps keep the Hello Aurora community reliable, exciting, and true to what’s happening in the sky right now.
