You planned the trip for months. You picked a strong Kp night. You still saw nothing but clouds, or an empty sky. This happens to a lot of travellers, and it is rarely bad luck. It is usually one of a few fixable mistakes. Below are the most common ones, and how to avoid them on your next trip.
Mistake 1: trusting the Kp index too much
The Kp index, short for the planetary K-index, is the number most people check first. A Kp of 5 sounds exciting, so travellers head out expecting a show. But Kp only reports a 3 to 6 hours average of past magnetic activity. It does not tell you what is happening in the sky right now, and it says nothing about your local conditions.
A Kp of 5 with thick clouds overhead means you see nothing. A Kp of 5 with weak Aurora Strength, weak Bt (the total strength of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field, or IMF), or a positive Bz (the north-south direction of that field) can also mean a quiet night. Auroras respond fastest to Bt and Bz, and these can shift in minutes, not hours.
What actually matters:
- Aurora Strength, a reading based on magnetometer data that reflects the real, current intensity of geomagnetic activity, rather than a 3-hour average.
- Bz, the north-south direction of the solar wind's magnetic field. A negative Bz lets solar wind energy into Earth's magnetic field, and that is what fuels the aurora.
- Bt, the overall strength of that magnetic field. Higher Bt paired with negative Bz means more potential for a strong, visible display.
- Solar wind speed, since faster wind carries more energy toward Earth.
